Large, orbiting asteroids were named in honor of two faculty members of the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department in 2001. Asteroid 1981 EH41 was named the 4395 DanBritt for Research Associate Professor Dr. Dan Britt. This asteroid orbits the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter and is about the size of the Great Smoky Mountains. Asteroid 1981 EX6 was named the McSween and honors Dr. Harry (Hap) McSween, distinguished professor in earth and planetary sciences and fellow (2002) of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Both men specialize in the study of Martian meteorites.
