The School of Architecture recognized one of the largest gifts to its 21st Century Campaign in September 1998, with the naming of the large auditorium in the building for the McCarty family. Renovation of the auditorium was made possible by a gift to the school by the local architectural firm of McCarty, Holsaple, McCarty and the McCarty family. Elizabeth McCarty was a 1946 UT graduate. Her husband, Bruce, was among the Tennessee architects instrumental in establishing the School of Architecture. Bruce’s son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Jane, were 1973 and 1977 graduates, respectively, of the School of Architecture; Elizabeth and Bruce’s son, Haynes, and daughter, Sarah, are also UT graduates. The McCarty architectural firm won the competition for design of the Art and Architecture Building in 1977, and Bruce and Doug were codesigners for the project, which was completed in 1981.
