Prior to 1847 department was used to designate whether a student was enrolled in the preparatory program, the collegiate program, or the English and Scientific program. In 1847 President Joseph Estabrook divided the collegiate studies into departments, in the modern sense of common disciplines. The first departments were Classical Department, Mathematical Department, Department of Natural Sciences, and Department of Moral Philosophy.
