Phi Beta Sigma was founded January 9, 1914, at Howard University in Washington, DC. The Kappa Chi Chapter was established at UT in spring 1979. The motto of the fraternity is “Culture for service, service for humanity.” The colors of the fraternity are royal blue and white; its mascot is the dove; and its flower is the carnation. The fraternity motto is “Culture for service and service for humanity.” The chapter motto is The Ball is Rolling. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., founded in 1920 with the assistance of Phi Beta Sigma, is the sister organization. No other fraternity and sorority are constitutionally bound as are Sigma and Zeta. Among notable alumni of the national organization are George Washington Carver, Emmitt Smith, and Jerry Rice. In 1950 Phi Beta Sigma was the first Greek organization to develop a youth auxiliary organization, a Sigma Beta Club, through which members mentor young men in elementary, middle, and high schools.
