The last vestige of Yale Avenue, a one-block road connector between Volunteer Boulevard and Phillip Fulmer Way, was renamed Peyton Manning Pass in 1997. Mayor Victor Ashe and the university decided to rename the street the year after Manning’s graduation. The first thought was to name the road Peyton Manning Drive. An architecture student suggested that Peyton Manning Pass would be more appropriate. A principal component of the Vol Walk on home football games, the street’s surface was embellished by a design emulating that of Shields-Watkins Field for which the Senior Gift Committees of the classes of 2007, 2008, and 2009 raised funds. The redesigned street was dedicated on October 19, 2012. Nathan and Katie Zipper, Adam Brown, Alex Hanson, and Taylor Reynolds, the chairs of the 2007, 2008, and 2009 Senior Gift Committees joined Manning and university officials to cut the ribbon officially to reopen the street. More than one thousand Vol fans attended the dedication ceremony.
