On April 30, 1991, an advisory task force appointed by Vice Chancellor Phil Scheurer met to consider the problem of major renovations required in the Panhellenic Building. The task force was composed of three active sorority members, three sorority alumnae, and three faculty/staff members. The major problem was that the first floor of the building had settled as much as eight inches since construction of the facility, with additional necessary repairs involving a fire alarm and elevator upgrade to make the building handicap-accessible, removal of an underground diesel fuel storage tank, and nominal utility repairs. Cost of the renovation was pegged at $1.5 million. The task force recommended that an interest-free loan of $1.5 million be made to Panhellenic, to be paid back over the next 30 years. Repayment of the loan was to begin in 1993, with the expiration of the current contract, to avoid overlapping of indebtedness. Sorority concerns centered on investing a large sum of money in a building that did not meet the sororities’ needs.
