In the 1976–77 academic year, seven women’s teams competed for the University of Tennessee. The sports were basketball, field hockey, gymnastics, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. These were the same seven sports that had been moved from club to institutional status in 1973 when UT first began to fund women’s athletics apart from the Club Sport rubric. Field Hockey and Gymnastics were dropped after the 1976–77 year. Golf was added in 1992; rowing and softball were added in 1995–96, and soccer began in 1996. After 2014, only women’s basketball competed under the name Lady Vols.
