Dr. W. A. Noyes was appointed professor of chemistry in August 1883. He held the PhD from Johns Hopkins. In 1886 he resigned following a reorganization to take a position at Rose Polytechnic Institute. He later became head of the Chemistry Department at the University of Illinois and president of the American Chemical Society. While at UT, he had obtained recognition by producing a new chemical component, a type of benzoic acid.
