Joseph E. Lopez

In 1953 UT was notified that it was the recipient of a bequest from the late Joseph E. Lopez, a New York insurance executive who graduated from UT in 1882. The gift, 7/100ths of the Lopez estate, amounted to approximately $200,000. Lopez made the gift in honor of his father-in-law, Col. S. H. Lockett, who was UT professor of mathematics from 1877 to 1883. This was the third gift of Mr. Lopez in honor of Colonel Lockett. In 1938 Lopez donated a fund to the UT Alumni Association for establishment of an “industries library” in the Placement Office and also donated one hundred shares of insurance company stock, the income from which was used for engineering scholarships that honored S. H. Lockett. Lopez was born in Milan, Tennessee, educated at UT as a civil engineer, and spent his active business life with the Continental Insurance Company of New York, retiring as president of the company in 1921.
