Two programs through which UT Knoxville students serve as paid interns working with state legislators are operated through the Political Science Department. The UT National Alumni Internship Program was begun in 1973. Through this program, any enrolled student may apply, be appointed, and work (January–June) with members of the Knox County legislative delegation. The Tennessee State Internship Program is open to students who have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and are enrolled in degree programs in political science, public administration, law, history, social work, economics, sociology, journalism, or related fields. These interns spend January through June in legislative leadership offices and committees. Both internship programs provide a stipend, travel allocation, and credit for course work in political science.
