The cornerstone for the Home Economics Building was laid on March 8, 1926. Sancy Bennett, head of the Home Economics Club, placed the following items in the box for the cornerstone: university catalog; views of the institution; a history of the Department of Home Economics, written by F. C. Lowry; announcement of the College of Agriculture; the annual report of the state supervisor of vocational education; a copy of the Economic and Social Study of Tennessee, by Professor C. E. Allred; the latest issues of the Orange and White and Mugwump; copies of the Knoxville Journal and Knoxville Sentinel for Sunday, March 7; a picture of Margaret Wilson, who laid the cornerstone; a picture of the building itself under construction; and a program of the exercises.
The building was dedicated on October 28, 1926, in Jefferson Hall. The UT band and UT orchestra played, and the principal address was given by Agnes Helen Harris, dean of women at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn, Alabama. The building was presented by General Cary F. Spence, chairman of the board of trustees’ Building Committee, and was accepted for the university by President Harcourt Morgan. A reception at the building followed.
