One of the earliest efforts to bring townspeople and university faculty together was the Irving Club, founded by Joshua Caldwell at the turn of the twentieth century. It was composed of 21 “literary men,” at least half of whom were from the Knoxville community and the remainder from the university. The group read and reviewed current books in an effort to keep abreast of new thinking and writing in a wide variety of fields.
