Interscholastic Track and Declamation Contests

In 1912 the university inaugurated the custom of holding annually an Interscholastic Track Contest and an Interscholastic Declamation Contest open to every High School, Preparatory School, and Private School in Tennessee and other schools in adjoining states accredited by the university. The first declamation competition (May 17, 1912) was won by Castle Heights School, Lebanon, Tennessee, which also (May 18, 1912) won the interscholastic track meet at the racetrack. There were 125 entries in the track meet. A doubleheader baseball game was played for the enjoyment of the interscholastic visitors, and the university’s annual Student Circus was held the night of May 18, followed by the Coronation Ball at the Lyceum Building, at which UT and the interscholastic awards were presented.
