UT signed its first formal linkage agreement with an international university, Technische Hochschule Aachen, in 1964. The agreement was initiated by the Space Institute and provided for informal faculty and student exchanges and for the A. W. Quick/B. H. Goethert Lecture Series, an opportunity for presentations at both institutes. A few of the other early linkage agreements were Lanzhou University (1983) physics exchange of faculty and enrollment of Lanzhou students in UT Knoxville graduate physics programs; University of Santiago (USACH, 1982) exchanges among faculty and students and a publication exchange; University of Amazonas (1978) cooperation in promoting and stimulating the joint study of technical, scientific, cultural, and human science problems linked to economic and social development.
