Thirty-six residential lots fronting Hayes Avenue and Princeton Avenue in the Circle Park Land Company’s addition to Knoxville were purchased as a block in April 1937 by UT from Margaret H. and Henry Hudson for $13,000, principally to provide practice fields and a baseball diamond but also to serve as a drill field for ROTC to assure that UT would not lose its ROTC program because of lack of a place to drill. Called Lower Hudson Field after the 1941 purchase of additional land from the Hudsons, it became the new baseball diamond for the intercollegiate baseball team, being dedicated April 11, 1951. It is now the site of Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Upper Hudson Field was purchased in 1941 for $6,500. It underwent a facelift in summer 1987 because of the planned construction of the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center. Prior to the 1987 reshaping, Upper Hudson had a 70-yard field and an 80-yard field, and a drill area of about 80 yards. Following the reshaping, Upper Hudson had one 70-yard field, one 80-yard field, and a drill area of about 35 yards. Upper Hudson field is now Haslam Field.
