Hounds on the Town

A partnership among the UT Athletics Department, the City of Knoxville, and the Dogwood Arts Festival brought the public art program Hounds on the Town to Knoxville in 2004, following in the footsteps of the popular Bearfoot in the City campaign that brought bears decorated by local artists to the streets of downtown (and a couple to UT). The hounds, also decorated by local artists, were sponsored by local businesses and organizations, and made their debut for the first football game. Each time a hound was sponsored, a smaller version became available to the Knox County Schools’ art classes for decoration. Sales of the large hounds benefitted the Dogwood Arts Festival and the Athletics Department scholarships; sales of the smaller versions benefitted the Knox County Schools’ arts programs.
