Home Management Houses—1218 White Avenue

As part of the Home Economics Building project, UT constructed a Home Management House behind the building at 1218 White Avenue. The eight-room, two-story structure contained a living room (16 feet by 20 feet), dining room, kitchen, and instructor’s room on the first floor, and four bedrooms with bath for the residents on the second floor. A fully equipped laundry was installed in the basement. The house was planned to provide a model home for a family in which there was no servant, with special attention being paid in the plans to saving unnecessary steps and labor. In December 1926 Dr. and Mrs. E. H. Lowe of Maryville presented the house with Hope Jr., a canary bird who was known to be very particular as to what selections on the Victrola he accompanied.

In 1958 this structure was converted to a Family Life Center, containing offices, classrooms, and counseling rooms for the Department of Child Development and Family Relations. It was later dubbed the “graduate house” and housed grant and contract activities and graduate students. It was razed in 2009.
