A student in the College of Agriculture (now Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources) in the 1960s, James Herbert cofounded Neogen Corporation in 1982 and became its chairman, president, and CEO. He became chairman of the board in 2006. Neogen offers a diverse line of animal and food safety products and specializes in developing easy-to-use and inexpensive tests for the paid detection of harmful bacteria, genetic modifications in foods, naturally occurring toxins, and food allergens. Neogen acquired Adgen Inc., Hacco Inc., and Hess and Clark in 2003, and also acquired Gene-Trak. In 2003 Forbes magazine named Neogen one of the best two hundred small businesses in America for the third consecutive year. Neogen declares itself as the one-stop food-safety shop for rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic tests—for food’s journey every step of the way from field to fork.
