Freshman Caps and Armbands

Male Freshmen at UT had worn green “caps” prior to World War I, and in 1921 a debate was held by the literary societies concerning whether the tradition should continue. By student referendum in December 1921, the 1921-22 “Freshman Cap” was established to be a green felt cap, jockey fashion, with a “UT” monogram, below which the numerals of the year of the student’s graduation were to appear. The same cap was adopted by the 1922 freshmen. In 1923 and 1924, the caps were navy blue with an orange and white insignia, and in 1923 armbands for women were also navy with orange and white numerals. Green returned until 1939 when the freshman cap was replaced by a “rooter’s hat.”
