The early literary societies (e.g., Chi Delta) had limited dramatic productions as part of their activities, and the first plays on campus are believed to have been presented about 1836. The first organization exclusively devoted to drama was the Kit Kat Klub Dramatic Club, formed in 1898 by male students. The Rouge and Powder Club was formed by female students in 1900. The first production of the Kit Kat Klub was Paul Leicester Ford’s The Best Laid Plan, a comedy given in 1899. By 1902 the Kit Kat Klub had disbanded, but the Rouge and Power Club invited men to take part in its productions. In 1910 the Rouge and Powder Club was renamed the Stagefright Club. A Dramatic Club was organized in January 1916.
