Although not the official fight song, “Fight! Vols, Fight!” was played often by the band and sung at chapel. Gwen Sweet wrote the song in 1938, and Thornton W. Allen and Milo Sweet wrote the music. The song was first played January 2, 1939, at the Orange Bowl victory of UT over Oklahoma (17-0).
The words are
VERSE I: Fight Vols, fight with all your might, / For the orange and white / Never falter, never yield / As we march on down the field/ (Keep Marching!) / Let the Spirit of the Hill / Every Vol with courage fill / Your loyalty means our victory / So fight,Vols, fight! / Fight! Remember the vict’ries of yore! / Right! Show them we know how to score, / Tennessee Fight!
VERSE II: Fight, Vols, fight with all your might / Keep the Torch e’er a flame / Fight! Vols, fight and lend the light / Bring us honor and acclaim! / Keep Marching! / Onward, forward Volunteers, / Put our rival team to flight; / For Tennessee we want victory, / So Fight, Vols, Fight!
