One of the five Knoxville Research Centers of Excellence designated in 2001 by President Wade Gilley, this center was designed to facilitate the exploration of the structure and function of biological molecules in order to understand complete molecular networks in living systems. Researchers at Knoxville, the UT Health Sciences, and ORNL were involved in the proposal to examine the structure of proteins coded by genes and how biomolecules interact to make a living cell.
