First Women’s Athletics Scholarships

In fall 1976 funding for 10 scholarships ($25,000) was provided for women’s athletics. “Fish Skin” was the nickname for the UT cadet uniform worn by male students beginning in 1844. Freshmen were commonly referred to as “fish.”

First Women’s Athletics Trophy

The first trophy awarded to a UT women’s athletic team was the first place trophy won by the volleyball team in 1959 at the East Tennessee State University’s invitational volleyball tournament. Female students in the UT Physical Education Department asked their instructor, Jean Wells, to take them.

Fisher, John Hurt
