Football Club Sport

In 1894 baseball was the game of choice, and the Athletic Association voted in October 1894 to abandon football. There were no formal teams in 1894 and 1895, but UT’s club team, captained by William B. Stokely, went 2-0-2 in 1894 and 4-2 in 1895. David Chapman was quarterback for the two seasons.

Flight Training

In spring quarter 1952, UT inaugurated an Aviation Flight Training Program, the first university-level program of its kind in the South. Football Coaches Killed in Car Wreck

In 1965 Bill Majors (age 26), who had been a standout tailback in 1958–60, and end coach Bob Jones (age 30) were killed instantly when a passenger train hit the car in which they and offensive line coach Charlie Rash were riding to work. Rash died four days later.

Football Game Parking Charge

In 1968 fees for parking in UT lots during football games were instituted. The fees were $2 for lots closest to the stadium and $1 for more remote lots.

Football GameDay DVD

In 2005 fans attending the final home game in Neyland Stadium first received, with the purchase of the Tennessee Playbook souvenir program, a free Vol Network DVD. Set to high-energy music and containing the play-by-play of Voice of the Vols Bob Kesling, the DVD contained music video highlights from the season’s games.

Fly and Sanitation Campaign

In 1916 the Agricultural Extension Service launched a “fly and sanitation” campaign, the promotional material for which proclaimed: “The day is near when it will be considered as much disgrace to have flies in the home as it is to have bed bugs.”

Football Games on Sundays

Tennessee has played seven football games on Sundays, four of them pre- or post-season special games, and three regular games. The first and latest two games have been regular season games.
