First Female PhD Recipient

In 1952 Minnie Cate Morrell earned the PhD in English (the second PhD awarded by the department). Her dissertation was on English Psalters—“A Manual of Old English Biblical Materials.” It was subsequently published in book form.

First Female Vice Chancellor

In 1986 Dr. Anne Mayhew, UT economics professor, was elected the first female president of the Association for Evolutionary Economics. AFEE is an international organization of economists and other social scientists devoted to analysis of economics as evolving, socially constructed, and politically governed systems. AFEE publishes the Journal of Economic Issues.

First Fire Escapes

On July 2, 1875, the trustees authorized the construction of two tall ladders as a means of escape from campus buildings in the event of fire. These were to be taken by students to appropriate windows of any building that caught fire.
