Following action by the legislature in the 1984–85 session, Martin Luther King’s birthday began to be celebrated as an official university holiday. The first observance was on January 21, 1985. (King’s birthday was January 15.)

First Housing Staff Reunion

April 12 and 13, 2002, was the first reunion of housing staff of the university. About 90 former resident assistants, housing directors, and other staff from as far away as California, attended. Eleven hundred former staff members were identified and invited to participate.

First Kidney Transplant at UT Hospita

Dr. Michael Goldman performed the first kidney transplant at UT hospital on February 27, 1985. The recipient, Frank E. Smith, age 37, received a healthy kidney from his sister, Beverly Bonds, age 36.

First Ice Hockey Game

As the preliminary to the Knoxville Knights-Greensboro Generals Ice Hockey game February 11, 1967, the newly organized UT Ice Hockey Club played its first collegiate match against Miami of Ohio at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. Miami won, 9-6.

First Knoxville WAVE

Edna Hixon, UT graduate and then state editor of the Knoxville Journal, was the first woman from Knoxville and one of only 12 Tennesseans to be selected for the Navy’s auxiliary, the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi at UT.
