First National Number 1 Ranking for Men’s Basketball

On February 25, 2008, the two major national polls ranked the UT Basketball Team number 1, following its victory over number 1 ranked University of Memphis on February 23. The Vols were ranked number 2 in the preceding polls. They played Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt the following Tuesday (February 26) and lost by 3 points.

First National Tournament Appearance

The 1919–20 men’s basketball team was the first intercollegiate team invited to a national tournament when it participated in the National A.A.N. Basket Ball Tournament held in Atlanta in 1920.

First Mixed Martial Arts Sanctioned Professional Fight in Tennessee

Thompson-Boling Arena was the site of the first sanctioned professional MMA fight in Tennessee in February 2009. Xtreme Fighting Championships put on the event and featured undefeated heavyweights Chad Corvin and Scott Barrett. A light heavyweight match pitting former UT linebacker Ovince St. Preux against CT Turner preceded the main event.

First NCAA Final Four Basketball Tournament for the Lady Vols

The Lady Vols participated in the first NCAA Women’s Final Four in the Old Dominion Fieldhouse in Norfolk, Virginia. Louisiana Tech beat UT 69-46 in the semifinal. UT hosted the NCAA Final Four in 1990. Although Tennessee did not make it to the final four in 1990, new NCAA attendance records were set.

First Named College

The College of Business was named the James H. Haslam II College of Business by the UT Board of Trustees at its meeting on October 3, 2014. The designation was made following a gift of $50 million to the college from the Pilot Flying J founder and his family.
