On a balmy September Sunday evening in 1952, men students conducted a “raid” on the women’s dormitories, seeking trophies of underwear to be thrown from the windows. Fourteen students were arrested but were released to the custody of Dean of Students Ralph Dunford.

First “Master Plan” for Physical Facilities

When the institution purchased the Hill in 1826, a building plan was prepared that called for a central college building and three dormitories. This plan may have been influenced by Thomas Jefferson’s 1810 letter describing an “academical village” and the building of such a village at the University of Virginia.
